Sometime between May 15, 1851 and 1854 the family moved to Hopkins County, Ky. In 1854 a 6th child, Robert Alexander Furgerson was born. Their last child, Dickson Given Furgerson, was born in 1858.
John (Wesley?) Furgerson married Mahulda, or Huldy, or Mahuldia Bruce. She was also from Tennessee, according to census records. Family tradition says that she was a native American.
We know nothing about them before they arrived in Hopkins County. Because of the number and proximity of Bruce’s and Furgerson’s listed in the 1840 and 1850 censuses, we believe they may have been from Lincoln, Marshall or Jefferson Counties, with Lincoln seeming to be most likely.
There was another family story that had to do with John and a brother having some sort of a falling out over a woman, which caused a parting of the ways. Also that they were wagon makers. Family stories say that either John or his father, probably John, changed the spelling of his last name in a dispute with his brother over the side he took in a war. Don’t know which war. His brother’s name may have been William.
